This herbal detox tea recipe supports and nourishes the liver. Drink it during times when your body has been overloaded with too much of the wrong foods and beverages, or exposure to environmental toxins. It tastes great and is especially good to drink after excessive consumption during the holidays.
The herbs included in this tea work in a couple of different ways. First, they are alterative. Alterative herbs cleanse the blood of toxins and impurities. We are exposed to so many toxins daily in our air, food and water putting strains on our overall health and wellness. Cleansing the blood additionally benefits other organs of elimination such as the kidneys, lungs, skin and lymphatic system.
The herbs in this herbal detox tea recipe also tonify the liver. This helps support the body when there are disorders such as skin, immune or hormonal issues. Tonifying the liver is important for chronic issues such as cancer, arthritis or diabetes. Finally, tonifying the liver strengthens the nervous system. This is beneficial since the nervous system and the liver support each other.
All of the herbs in the recipe are very safe. Let’s take a look at each one.
Sarsaparilla Root, Smilax ornate or Smilax regelii
Sarsparilla is slightly sweet, helping to create a great tasting tea. It was one of the original ingredients in root beer. Sarsaparilla is a valuable alterative to help purify the blood. It is especially good for skin conditions.

Birch Bark, Betula lenta
Bark from this birch tree species tastes a bit like wintergreen. It is an excellent tonic and detoxifier.
Dandelion Root, Taraxacum officinale
Dandelion can be a bit bitter tasting but it is one of the best liver tonics. It increases the activity of the liver and helps to purify the blood.
Burdock Root, Arctium lappa
Burdock root is another excellent blood purifier for all kinds of conditions. However, it really excels at helping with any kind of skin condition.
Ginger, Zingiber officinale
Ginger helps stimulate digestion and is carminative, relieving gas and colic. It enhances the effects of the other herbs in the tea.
Cinnamon and vanilla are added for their carminative benefits as well as enriching the flavor of the tea. Stevia is included as a sweetener.
Herbal Detox Tea Recipe:
This herbal detox tea recipe makes two cups that can be sipped throughout the day.
- 2 cups (500 ml) Water
- 2 tsp (10ml) Sarsaparilla
- 1 tsp (5ml) Birch Bark
- 1 tsp (5ml) Dandelion Root
- 1 tsp (5ml) Burdock Root
- 1 tsp (5ml) Ginger Root
- 1/2 Cinnamon Stick
- Pinch of Stevia
- 1/4 tsp (1.25ml) Vanilla Extract

Add the vanilla extract and strain the herbs out for composting. The second cup can be reheated if desired.

You’re welcome Laurie! Happy holidays to you too!
I do not care for Stevia because I get a bitter aftertaste from it. Is there another sweetener that can be used without detracting from the medicinal value of the tea?
Hi Rose,
You could add some honey which will not detract at all. In fact, it has beneficial enzymes and antibacterial properties.
